Montpellier, the oldest medical school in the world
The University of Montpellier’s Faculty of Medicine is the oldest medical school in the world. On 17 August 2020, it will celebrate 800 years of existence. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the school was created by political mandate: in 1181 William VIII, Lord of Montpellier, authorized the right to exercise and teach medicine in the city, and on 17 August 1220, Cardinal Conrad of Urach, the papal legate of Pope Honorius III, issued the first statutes ‘officializing’ the medical faculty. The school developed over the centuries, drawing on the medical knowledge of Arab, Jewish and Christian cultures in a humanist and scientific spirit that continues to this day. Its architectural, artistic and scientific heritage are priceless: a collection of 11,000 anatomical objects, hundreds of medieval manuscripts and early printed books, 100,000 printed volumes on every field of knowledge, 1000 drawings by master artists such as Rubens, Titian, Tintoretto and Fragonard, one of France’s oldest herbariums, and a magnificent botanical garden that was created at the behest of King Henry IV in 1593.
Yet today’s Montpellier-Nîmes Medical School is also the most recent in France, with the inauguration of its new state-of-the-art site in 2017, situated next to the Montpellier University Hospital. In this ultra-modern setting, the latest technology and teaching methods transmit medical training with an emphasis on ethics and the patient–caregiver relationship. The Faculty of Medicine, associated with the university hospitals of both Montpellier and nearby Nîmes, is part of the University of Montpellier. The medical school is participating alongside research institutions in the Montpellier University of Excellence (MUSE) project to address major challenges for the 21st century through research and education in the three areas of ‘Feed, Protect and Care’.
Cornerstone of the University of Montpellier, the Faculty of Medicine is held in high esteem in Montpellier by virtue of its history and its legacy, but its importance extends far beyond the city, with an impact that reaches internationally. This commemoration of its 800-year history is an occasion to bring together all communities, both academic and non-academic, to share humanist values in the service of building a better future.
This event exists thanks to your involvement. Thank you.

THE
PROGRAMME
The period of confinement forces us to review the entire program of
scientific and historical events intended for academics or the general public.
If for the moment almost no event has been canceled,
we are working on the organization of a new program which will resume, we hope, from September 2020.
